When you think about war surgery, the first thing that comes to mind is action: surgeons and nurses all ready to clean the wound, cut, sew, bandage, medicate, position the drainage…as quickly as they can.
All of this is made possible by training. The international staff at our hospitals work alongside local staff, organizing lessons for continuous “on-the-job” training.
“You never see them lose patience. They always keep one eye on the patient and are able to give you a sense of confidence with cases you’ve never seen before,” explains Sabrina, EMERGENCY nurse in Lashkar-gah, Afghanistan. “They care a great deal. This is their hospital.”
