TIME Magazine announced this week that the Ebola fighters are their ‘Person of the Year 2014’. We’d like to emphasize the importance of this recognition by highlighting some of our skilled and courageous staff working relentlessly on the front lines of the Ebola crisis.
Mariama is a pediatrician working out of EMERGENCY‘s Surgical and Pediatric Center in Goderich, Sierra Leone, which is the only fully functioning hospital in the country. Read her reflection on what it means to work with EMERGENCY during this crisis:
“Every day, with my work, I realize how important this hospital is for my people. We see one hundred children a day—we support the future of Sierra Leone, with high quality free medical care. Imagining what would have happened here if this hospital had closed and if EMERGENCY had not decided to run the Ebola centers is a nightmare. In Sierra Leone people are still dying of common diseases, let alone Ebola. I am proud to be part of this story”.
