Iya was born in the government hospital of the Kono district with a serious congenital defect, but the operation that he urgently needed couldn’t be carried out in that hospital. The hospital asked for help from Sara, Medical Coordinator at our Surgical Center in Goderich, Sierra Leone.
Iya arrived at EMERGENCY‘s Goderich Surgical Center wrapped in a colorful blanket in the arms of his mother.
It was a complicated procedure to carry out on a baby just 4 days old, but Iya is now recovering in our Intensive Care Unit, looked after by our staff who are cheering him on.
Despite all the difficulties and the fear of possible contagion, the Goderich hospital has never stopped operating, even at the height of the Ebola epidemic. The Center continues to be the point of referral for surgical treatment for the whole country.
